Mangystau Oblast is located in Western Kazakhstan on a peninsula washed by the Caspian Sea on three sides. The main economic industry in the Oblast is oil production, which has drawn the world’s biggest investment companies to the region for many years. The high economic potential for tourism development in Mangystau Oblast was confirmed by marketing researches carried out in Kazakhstan by the international consulting company IPK INTERNATIONAL in 2005-2006. Mangystau Oblast has four serious opportunities to develop tourism: Business tourism (business trips + conferences), Beach tourism, Learning about the nature and culture, New types of leisure (safari, diving, desert camping, etc.). With these taken into account, the Oblast Akimat has begun to draft the master plan on further tourism development in the Oblast. The plan includes development of the Kenderli resort area which will unite six different entertainment complexes of a world level. The project will also include activities to use the existing tourist potential all over the Oblast, which will allow to offer tourists not only sea recreation but also learning about the national culture, peculiarities of a steppe life, and unique natural landscapes, not see anywhere in the world.
