The Tourism and Sports Department is a body authorised to deal with tourism development. The Atyrau Oblast is a favourable region for development of tourism and recreation. Its natural resources and historic and cultural heritage allow developing curative, recreational, sports, cultural, ecological, extreme, and other kinds of tourism. Tourists arriving in the Atyrau Oblast can get acquainted with a special individuality of landscapes of the ancient Caspian area with its history, culture, economy, and people’s life. However, the rich-in-history territory has no developed tourism infrastructure today. Encounters with wild nature, with the mysterious world of caves, with miraculous natural monuments, hiking adventures, all that can be found at cretaceous exposures on Akkergeshen and Aktolagai Plateaus, Mount Imankar (Zhylyoi District). Paleontological excursions for the oblast’s schoolchildren are annually organised in this area.
