Based in Sharjah, Air Arabia is the region’s leading low-cost carrier and offers regular and direct flights to over 44 destinations across the Middle East, North Africa, central and south Asia. Established in February 2003 by an Amiri decree issued by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qassimi, Ruler of Sharjah and Member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, Air Arabia began operations in October later that year. Starting with two aircraft flying to five destinations, Air Arabia today has a fleet of sixteen Airbus A320 aircraft and operates regular flights to 44 destinations in Armenia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Egypt, Greece, India, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Turkey and Yemen. Air Arabia is modelled after leading American and European low-cost airlines, yet is customised to meet local and regional preferences. Its main focus is to make air travel more convenient and affordable by offering some of the lowest fares in the market without sacrificing on service or safety standards. Air Arabia’s success is rooted in a business model that focuses on short-haul routes to airports in and around major population centers. The airline offers direct flights to airports that fall within a radius of five hours of flight time. The carrier success as a service provider is reflected in its performance as a company. The airline was able to achieve a financial break even result in the first year of operations, a milestone achievement in the airline industry. Growth and expansion have continued for the company in 2007, with the carrier recording a net profit for the first three months of the year of AED 43.4 million. Over 580,000 passengers were served during this period alone, an increase of 17 percent from the fourth quarter of 2006.
